Forty years ago on April 4th we lost a true visionary and a heroic leader when Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis. He was a man who moved humankind forward. What makes King heroic is that he knew that with every step towards his dream, his promised land, he was walking towards to his own demise. And he never quit marching.
It wasn’t about race relations with Dr. King. It was about freedom. It was about peace. It was about equal human rights. It was about respect. It was about love. It was about hope. And it was about children growing up in a better world than he had experienced.
He left a powerful and challenging legacy behind. Can we continue to do that legacy justice? I sure hope so!
This is his last speech, made in Memphis the night before he was killed:

Let us turn our thoughts today
To Martin Luther King
And recognize that there are ties between us
All men and women
Living on the earth
Ties of hope and love
Sister and brotherhood
That we are bound together
In our desire to see the world become
A place in which our children
Can grow free and strong
We are bound together
By the task that stands before us
And the road that lies ahead
We are bound and we are bound
There is a feeling like the clenching of a fist
There is a hunger in the center of the chest
There is a passage through the darkness and the mist
And though the body sleeps the heart will never rest
